I've created a monster...
Why do I buy new toys? This past week I bought Ethan a new ride-on train, correction, alphabet train. It has lots of fun things to play with, it sings songs, makes lovely train noises, Ethan can push it and he can even ride on it. Well, let's just say he loves to ride on it.
With Ethan being sick understandably he has not been his normal bubbly self. Thursday and Friday night I spent over an hour each night pushing him on his train around the circle in our house. I have listened to the "Chugga Chugga Choo Choo all around..." song about a million times and have discovered back muscles I never knew I had. Every time I tried to take Ethan off the train he would cry. The second his bottom was back in the seat he would stop. The good news is that we broke Bella of her bad habit of chasing wheeled objects (she would try to attack scooters and bikes when we lived in the city- yes, try explaining to the owners/parents that she was going for the vehicle, not the rider). Anyways, Ethan loves his new train. As a warning to all other parents- Great toy! Hazardous to your back!

Kisses for Momma
After three days of antibiotics Ethan spiked a fever today of 102. Go figure. Needless to say he is not feeling well at all and just wants his Momma all day. The poor little guy, once again, is such a trooper though! In between naps he lets his little personality show and Momma sure does love the extra kisses she is getting today!

He's a Superstar!
Ethan is such a little trooper. Despite having another ear infection this little guy is always happy.
We suspected he had another ear infection when for the second night in a row he woke up screaming at 3AM. When he woke up this morning his ear was completely red and scratched from him grabbing it all night. Despite being under the weather, I arrived at daycare to find him playing hide and seek with one of his friends, Kevin. He was laughing hysterically at Kevin jumping up from behind the sofa. It was quite cute.
After his doctors appointment we came home to have dinner and he was such a good boy showing me how big he was, clapping, giving me high fives, and his new favorite trick: He loves to share his food with Patrick and I. One for Ethan, one for Mommy or Daddy. I got cheerios tonight, Patrick got cookies this morning. I want to know why Daddy gets cookies and I don't? :)
So, this day has been yet another lesson to me. We all complain about so many things yet these sweet little babies just deal with the cards they are dealt and try to enjoy the most out of life. We all can learn a lot from our kids.

January Update
As pathetic as it is, this full-time work gig is interfering with my blogging. As for an Ethan update...
He is all boy! Flipping on every diaper change, walking, crawling, harrassing the dogs, throwing things, you name it! He is getting better at walking however still falls when turning or when he tries to speed up. He has however finally decided to crawl in the traditional way. He must have figured out it was quicker than the army crawl. He is EVERYWHERE now! Finalizing the babyproofing is first on the agenda for the weekend. He is cutting his top front teeth. One is already through and I think the other will be through tonight- poor little guy, that is always a rough night. He is also following simple commands very well (stand, sit down, find the ball, but your food in your mouth, touch your ears, etc.). It is actually quite fun now and I think quite amazing that this little guy is a functional little person (in some regards). Dinner time is fun now too. He is eating all regular foods and loves it. His favorites are grilled cheese, oatmeal (with apples and cinnamon), spagetti, tilapia, carrots, bananas, pancakes, mac and cheese, and when all else fails soy yogurt. It of course takes twice as long to feed him but it is a fun show to watch.
This past weekend he passed the 9 month date. We still can't believe that he is creeping in on that 1 year birthday. Time Flies!
Nothing much else new. I am working in my new territory, still with Pfizer Anti-Infectives, in the Bronx. For the most part my hospitals are safe. There are only a few I would not go near after dark. My new manager is great. He understands the business and really "gets it". He is very fair, intelligent, and realistic which I appreciate especially being a working Mom.
Patrick is busy, as usual. Things have really picked up recently making for some late nights but he still loves his work.
The dogs are good. I think they wish they didn't have a little brother sometimes but then they change their minds when he gets into the highchair. Yes, Ethan feeds the dogs and finds it extremely funny when they lick his chair or hands (yuck). We are working on keeping them away for the chair while he is eating but they still love getting to clean up the drop zone.
We are looking forward to the long weekend for some family time and hope everyone else has a wonderful weekend.

Finally...some holiday pictures!
I know I am slacking but being back to work signigicantly cuts into my blogging time:)
The holidays were busy, as usual, for us but we had a wonderful time visiting our family in Michigan. I left early because, as many of you know, Grandma Lucy fell and crushed (broken in over 10 places) her leg. She had surgery and is doing well but I wanted to be home to do what I could. We had fun visiting with Jenny, Tim, and Kaylee while she was staying at their house and the cousins were able to log many hours playing and pulling hair (sorry Kaylee).
Before Christmas we went to the Detroit area to visit Patrick's family. Christmas morning was a lot of fun with Ethan and Grandma and Grandpa Hurford. Of course he is too young yet but he did enjoy tearing paper and chewing bows before he grew tired of that.
Back to the Grand Rapids area we went Christmas afternoon where we stayed until the 29th. We celebrated Christmas with Grandad and Gina and were back off to Detroit for one more day until we drove home on the 30th.
I decided not to fly home with Ethan because we were all sick and the Grand Rapids airport was having a disaster of a time over the holidays maintaining order. I didn't want to chance it so we drove through the night. It worked out well except the dogs were practically touching the ceiling because we brought so much stuff home (Thank you everyone!). Oh- I guess I should clarify that we bought a new Tahoe at Thanksgiving so now we all fit in one car. Besides changing Ethan on my lap and letting him dance for 20 minutes out of his seat at a rest area in the middle of nowhere Pennsylvania when he decided we should have a party bus at 1:45AM, the ride home was fine. I'd do it again.
Ethan updates:
- He waves hi and bye but only says bye
- He is cutting his top two teeth
- He went to the ER twice while in Michigan for wheezing and had breathing treatments (please God don't let it be asthma)
- Had his first ear infection while in GR (Thanks Ellen (Dr. Kruggel- Great pediatrician in GR if anyone needs one) for seeing us on such short notice and fielding my pathetic call for help at 10:00 PM)
- and the biggie...
ETHAN IS NOW WALKING!!!!!!
Yes, Lord help me, our 8 and a half month old took his first steps and is now fearless! He falls a lot right now but that is not stopping him. I am told it is only a matter of weeks until he is unrestricted. Babyproofing is first on the agenda this weekend. Luckily he doesn't really crawl so unless he can pull himself up on something he is pretty slow on the floor with the commando crawl.

Winter Wonderland
We had our first snowfall this year with accumulation yesterday. Today it was 40 and sunny so we took full advantage of the day. I picked Ethan up from daycare early in his sled. He has now officially gone sledding down the hill in our front yard and loved just being pulled around. Mom had quite the workout. We had so much fun.

The Greatest Feeling in the World
I have decided that the greatest feeling in the world is knowing that your child is happy. I have been feeling so unbelievably guilty about having him in daycare until today. I just dropped him off and as soon as he heard Christopher, Mikala, JJ and Anna he started panting and flailing with excitement. I could barely get his coat off because he was wiggling to get down. Ann-Marie (his "teacher") took him and he never looked back. As I put his coat away I watched him immediately begin to "play" with the other kids, smile and talk. It was the greatest feeling to know that he not only has that interaction (which I can not provide), is safe and most important, is happy.

"Sledding"
One of Ethan's early Christmas gifts was a new sled from Grandma and Grandpa Hurford. Of course we gave it to him early but since we do not have sufficient amounts of snowfall to enjoy the great outdoors... we improvised! Ethan loves "sledding" in the living room. (No that is not our carpet, our rug is being replaced so that is only the padding- long story)

Ethan Walking
I think we are in trouble. Ethan has gone from walking holding our hands to walking behind his walker. This video was taken Sunday, December 2, by today he is already able to start and stop it on his own while maintaining his balance. He is only 7 months old. Any advice besides baby-proof now?
